Me personally? Look, mountain man or not, I’d say go to the southwest. Between all the unincorporated areas, Texas’s love of all things RVing, and endless spaces to boondock in, you can live very cheap for a very long time. Those iconic southwest landscapes are just the cherry on top! (You can even buy a plot of unincorporated land and set yourself up semi-permanently.)
But whatever you do, slow down. Stay in some of the more questionable but vibrant communities of RVers. You’ll meet some of the best folk out there in some of the most unlikely of places.
RV life was made for a slower more accepting existence. In a world that constantly feels like it’s hustling for the next quota, there’s a real earnesty in enjoying those contemplative rides across the Great Plains.
